Sun hat tutorial

I have been sewing up a storm preparing for market days next month.  It's going to be my first time away from my town, so I am looking forward to a good experience and meeting lots of people.  Anyways, as promised, I made a tutorial on sewing sunhats, reversible, if that is what they call it.  I went to our local Vinnies shop (op shop) yesterday and found myself a
good sized cut denim and it just made my day.

Plates and saucers.  They came handy to me. I got the smallest one, because I intended to make a newborn sunhat.  You need the usuals, marking pen, tape measure, scissors, etc.

You'll be marking two circles, one for the middle part and another for the brim.  As shown in the picture by marking 2 1/2 from the middle circle.  I made sure I marked lots of dots to easily mark the second circle.

You will end up with all these cut patterns. Since it is going to be reversible, I made sure I picked a flowery one for the other side. The two long bands measure 18" for that size of a hat.  How did I come up with it? I used a tape measure to run it around the circle and ended up with that number which is pretty accurate when I sewed it in.

Sew up the band of fabric two edges together, right sides facing together.
Then take your first circle and sew the band around, making sure you sew right sides facing together.

Then you end up with a bucket looking like this.  Do the same with the denim material.

Then it's time sew in brim on to the band, right sides facing together.

You see, I learnt as I sewed here, The other circle is not the perfect length, so I had to make adjustments, before closing it, there was a big gap, which I of course had to cut as shown on the picture.

Before cutting it, stitch the excess not in a straight line but slanting outwards.

Then proceed to cut the excess part.

Close the gap finally.

Make sure you top stitch your hat atop and just below.

After you have done all the top stitching, you can attach your clothing labels if you have one, as I did.

Attach your embellishments, in my case is a flowery bow.

Then on top of each other, right sides together, sew the edges of the brim , making sure you leave 2" inch gap opening.

This  2" gap is to pull them inside out.

Pull it inside out.

Top stitch the edges of the brim.

Now you've got a reversible sun hat.

I made a bigger one  for my Savannah.

Enjoy your sunhat!  If you have further questions on the tutorial, I'll try my hardest to simplify for you.

I'm still working on redesigning my blog.  It is my first time on this, so I guess my designs and layout are still very elementary but I hope readable and visible.

Thanks for visiting again.  Till next time.
